Project manager and mural designer Maggie LaNoue wanted to be sure that the community knows that this graffiti is a very special part of the entire project. Artists Nicholas and Rick Whitfield volunteered their time and talent to promote the mural unveiling ceremony. And their work is bringing attention to the upcoming event in a way that no press release could do. The work is in progress as of Monday, August 6, and promises to be a distinctive and memorable part of the entire project. Both of the Whitfields will be attending Kalamazoo Valley Community College this fall, and both of them will be taking some classes in graphic design. Their work was done with permission from city officials. The property owner, Citizens Bank, also gave permission for the sign, as well as for the entire mural project on the site of the bank drive-thru. The Whitfields hope that graffiti can some day be recognized as a true art form, and that graffiti artists will realize the need to operate within the parameters of societal rules, so that their work can be credited to the artists, and better appreciated by their communities. Nicholas Whitfield stated, “There is so much energy that goes into this type of art, and it would benefit a community to have a way to channel this energy in positive ways. If artists would look for ways to make their communities more livable and friendly, and not do things that destroy property, we would all have a better place to live.” |
