The Pancake Chefs, in particular, Chef Peter Mitchell (President of Albion College) diligently cooked piles of pancakes for the hungry Albionites who turned out for this successful fundraising event. VolunTEENS from Albion High School came to lend a hand. Announcement of the Event ALBION -The Albion Volunteer Service Organization (AVSO) will kick off its 2003 activities with a pancake and sausage breakfast Saturday, Feb. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at the First United Methodist Church's Tennant Hall, 600 E. Michigan Ave. All proceeds from the breakfast will go toward AVSO programs providing volunteer services and support for other area nonprofit organizations. AVSO board member Brenda Merrild is chairing the event. The public is welcome. The cost for adults (age 12 and older) is $6; for seniors (age 60 and older) and children (age 11 and under), it is $3. Serving will be continuous throughout the morning. Celebrity chef for the breakfast is Albion College President Peter Mitchell who will assist in the kitchen in complete chef's garb. Mitchell co-chairs the Greater Albion Alliance and has supported several community projects through foundation grants the college has received. Also assisting with the breakfast will be members of Albion High School's VolunTeens and of Albion College's Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Albion Felpausch Food Center and Albion Meat Locker have both generously donated supplies for the event. AVSO is planning a number of other activities in the coming months to benefit the Greater Albion community. The VolunTeens will be collecting pledges and participating in the Walk for Warmth Feb. 23. The second annual AVSO Black Squirrel Dinner will be held April 12 at Albion College's Baldwin Hall, with the proceeds also supporting community volunteer programs. AVSO will honor all those area residents who volunteer throughout the year during the annual Volunteer Recognition Week April 21-27. A recognition dessert program is planned for that week.
