1945 BOY SCOUT PHOTO

Morning Star, November 25, 2007, pg. 6

Does anyone have a photo of Porter’s Bike Shop at 202 N. Superior St.? It was located on the east side of the street just south of the railroad tracks. Operated by Glenn Porter during the 1950s and 1960s, this was a familiar place for youth who rode bicycles, or who wanted their lawn mower repaired. Ken Porter wants a photo of his dad’s establishment and has asked me to pass this request along to our readers. He’ll help me with an article about the place if we can come up with a photo.

Our readers really enjoyed the photo of the 1942 Albion High School football team a few weeks ago. Here’s another vintage photograph from that era, this time courtesy of Steve Mills. It is a photo of Albion Boy Scout Troop No. 59 taken at their trip to Mackinac Island in July, 1945. Scouting was once big here, and there were several troops that were sponsored by local churches and organizations. How many of our readers can recognize some of the persons in this week’s photo?

Front row, left to right: Wayne Crandall, Robert Hunt, Dick Sayles, Leonard Kracko, Ted Gibbs, Robert Goodall, and Dave Mills. Middle row: Sam Friia, Robert Walkotten, Harold Wochholz, William Boldt, Charles Howell, and Bernard Konkle. Back row: Scoutmaster Darrel Boldt, Robert Ackley, Marvin Hull, Larry Crandall, Harley Transue, Don Crandall, and Assistant Scoutmaster Don Hunt.
