1970s ALBION BOOKLET
Morning Star, August 17, 2014, pg. 12
Recently there was distributed via a major area daily newspaper a resource booklet for residents of Calhoun County. In the section concerning Albion you might have noticed some mistakes, inaccuracies and omissions for those of us over here in the 517 area code. Sometimes it is better for a community to come out with its own promotional brochure than to let others do it for us.
There have been numerous promotional booklets concerning Albion that have been produced through the years, sponsored by groups such as the City of Albion, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Albion Area Chamber of Commerce. These are great historical references as they feature photographs of various businesses that were in existence at the time.
Albion Chamber of Commerce promotional 25 page booklet from the early 1970s
One prominent booklet that was used to promote our city was produced in the early 1970s by the Albion Chamber of Commerce. Twenty-five pages in length, this booklet includes numerous photographs from a cross section of our town. The cover proudly states, "Albion, City with a Future. Education, Religion, Industry, Agriculture, Oil."
The cover illustrates an Albion College street sign with the aforementioned themes mentioned on them. The cover photo shows a student sitting by "the rock" on the campus at Albion College, painted with various colors.
Inside are advertisements and photographs of various Albion industries and businesses. How many of these can you remember? Hayes Albion Corporation, Albion Iron & Metal Co., Starr Commonwealth for Boys, Miller Jewelers, Felpausch Food Center, North Eaton St. Gulf, Little John’s, Dan Siler Insurance, Park’s Drugs Store, Arnold Tire & Battery Co., Albion Community Hospital, Smith-Pulling Agency, The Bank of Albion, AAA, Howard Reed Furniture, Albion Metal Products, Western Auto Associate Store, McGraw Edison, Harrison’s Standard Service, Gambles, Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, Albion Sanitary Service, Wilking Office Supply, Horta-Craft Corporation, Maple City Auto Sales Co., and Corning Glass Works.
Of course there are features about the Albion Public Schools, Albion College, the Festival of the Forks and recreational opportunities here. From our Historical Notebook this week we illustrate the cover of this promotional booklet. How many of our readers have ever seen or read this?
