ALBION HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1925

Morning Star, June 6, 2025, pg. 5

Each year at this time we feature the Albion High School class of 100 years ago. The class of 1925 graduation week began with a chaperoned class trip to Niagara Falls. The trip was arranged by the class advisor, Miss Gladys Parker, and Albion High School principal William C. Harton (1890-1959) for both educational and entertainment purposes. Fifty-six members of the class took the interurban from Albion to Detroit on Monday, June 15, 1925. From there they then boarded a steamboat named "The Greater Buffalo." The students spent the night on the ship traveling on Lake Erie and arrived in Buffalo, New York on Tuesday morning. The were then transported by rail car to Niagara Falls. For the next two days they visited many sites on special sight-seeing wagons, including the Falls, of course. Of curious interest was a trip to the Shredded Wheat Biscuit Company plant there. They arrived back in Albion the afternoon Thursday, June 18 just in time for their Class Day and Commencement activities the following day of Friday, June 19.

The class of 1925 consisted of 72 members; 37 were girls, and 35 were boys. The class motto was, "We Finish to Begin." The class colors were green and white. The class valedictorian was Margaret Sleight; the salutatorian was Dorothy Wilson. The class officers were: President, Hoadley Gillette; Vice-President, Carleton Knack; Secretary, Dorothy Wilke; Treasurer, Luna Bachelor. The Breeze Annual yearbook for 1925 cost $1.00 each. Eugene Houck was the editor, and Carleton Knack the business manager.

The commencement activities were held the evening of June 19, 1925, at the local Methodist Church on E. Erie St., customary of those times. Speaker for the event was Rev. Carleton Brooks Miller, pastor of the Congregational Church of Battle Creek. The diplomas were given to the graduates by superintendent Donald Harrington. The class memorial was presented to the board of education by class vice-president Carlton Knack. It was a painting entitled "The Oath of Knight" from Abby's Holy Grail Series.

In looking through the list of graduates of the Class of 1925, a few of them stood out to me, and those all lived into their ‘90s. Rita Juckett (1908-2007) was supervisor of nurses in the maternity ward at Sheldon Memorial Hospital 1945-1970. Gerald Davis (1908-2001) was a union official at Service Caster for 28 years, then a partner in the Alfab Company for 20 years. He was also an active member of the Albion Stamp Club. Carlton Knack (1907-1997) worked for many years as secretary for the Vaughn-Ragsdale Company, a clothing chain headquartered in Albion.

Here is the list of graduates of the Class of 1925: Luna D. Bachelor, Charles W.
