Morning Star, February 6, 2026, pg. 5 We continue with our theme of "Albion - 100 Years Ago." February 1, 1926: "A quick run by Albion's new rural fire-truck prevented the total loss of the residence of James Hager at Bath Mills, three miles east of Albion Saturday night, keeping down the loss to about $1,000." February 6, 1926: "Abe Tucker of Concord, owner of the equipment and furnishings of the Garden Theatre in the Rosenthal Block [Albion], removed his property to Concord Friday and workmen started at once on the task of remodeling the interior of the former Theatre, which will form part of the J. J. Thwaites Furniture Galleries." "Marengo is without an express office, and will soon be without a Michigan Central freight and ticket agent. The ticket office closes February 10, 1926. Railroad officials were in Marengo Wednesday and made arrangements with Warren S. Nowlin to carry the mail to and from the trains from February 10, 1926 until such a date as the government decides whether or not Marengo shall have a post office." February 8, 1926. Grinnell Brothers Close Store Here; Bellows to Leave. Announcement was made today by E. R. Bellows, manager of the Albion branch store of Grinnell Brothers that the concern had decided to close its establishment here, located at 414 S. Superior St." February 9, 1926. "Jim McGuire of Duck Lake, veteran major league catcher and one of the best-known baseball men in the country, today signed up with the Albion College athletic board of control to coach the college baseball squad this spring. The hiring of McGuire was made possible only through cooperation of the College and the town, part of his salary being provided for by the College athletic board of control, and part by local men of the stores and shops who were anxious to see what Albion's grand old man of baseball could do with the youngsters in Athletic Director Rube Betchtel's squad." February 16, 1926: "A new salary ordinance for the members of the Albion Fire Department in which renumeration depends upon the length of time a man has been in the service, as well as upon what rank he had attained, was passed on its first reading at Monday evening's regular meeting of the City Council." February 19, 1926. "The Ex-Canadians Club will hold a mid-winter picnic on February 22 in the Woodman Hall. Dernier's orchestra will furnish music and Fred Wing will call." February 26, 1926: "Two more residences at 406 Mechanic St., and 101 N. Ann St. were quarantined today for scarlet fever, both patients being young children. Because of the fact that all of the cases thus far reported have been in families having pupils at the Dalrymple school, the school was closed today and may possibly be closed next week." "The Lawn Bowling Association has completed the purchase of property on N. Berrien St. and work on it will go forward as soon as weather permits. February 27, 1926. Hospital Notes. "James Joslin, colored, 104 S. Albion St. had an operation at the Sheldon hospital today. Miss Virginia Frank of Dayton, OH, who is recovering from an operation for appendicitis performed Wednesday, showed marked improvement today. Mrs. Chester Robinson, who is critically ill at the Sheldon Hospital, is somewhat better today."
