Albion HISTORY
With the troubling times and wars that the U.S. is involved with, it is interesting to review past conflicts and how some Albionites sought out adventure and involvement. One of the most interesting people born in Albion was Gwen Dew, born here in 1902.
She graduated from Albion High School, attended Albion College and wrote for the college newspaper, "the Pleaid." For a short time, she was the society editor of the Albion Evening Recorder. She was an adventurous woman, and was one of the first 25 women in the U.S. to have a solo pilot's license. She was head of publicity for the FTD florists.
Gwen moved up to work for the Detroit News, and further-- traveling around the world writing about news and also did newscasts of her adventures. When the war broke out with Japan, Gwen went to Japan and became a prisoner of war there. There is a very interesting podcast of her P.O.W. experience here.
and an article by Frank Passic about Gwen Dew and her Albion origins here on the Albion Home Page. |
